OLE MISS:Tigers could field 460 pounds of QB
OXFORD – Junior college transfer Arkelon Hall won the starting job at Memphis, but he won’t be the only quarterback on the field Saturday, Memphis offensive coordinator Clay Helton says.
Will Hudgens, who spent the summer pitching in the Cincinnati Reds organization, is back for his senior year and will be used in certain situations.
Between Hall and Hudgens the Tigers have almost 500 pounds of quarterback in the backfield.
Memphis and Ole Miss begin the regular season Saturday night at 6 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The Tigers were 7-6 last year and are picked fourth in Conference USA this season.
“I’ve watched Hudgens. He’ll run over you. When he gets behind his pads he’s a load,” Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix said.
Hudgens was the backup to Martin Hankins in 2007 and finished the season having thrown for 587 yards and five touchdowns. Hudgens (6-4, 240) was the team’s deep snapper last season and also lined up at fullback on occasion. He had two rushing touchdowns.
