The Mountaineers gained instant fame in last season’s opener by upsetting No. 5 Michigan before 109,000 people in Ann Arbor, Mich. Presumably Appalachian State will no longer own the surprise factor when it opens this season Saturday at LSU in a matchup of both defending Division I national champions.
The Tigers will be well aware that Appalachian State has won the past three Division I Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) national titles and that the Mountaineers were an overwhelming choice for the No. 1 preseason ranking in their division.
