Auburn freshman receiver Philip Pierre-Louis impresses coaching staff in second scrimmage
AUBURN — Rain and thunder moved through Auburn Saturday afternoon, but that was long after a morning scrimmage in Jordan-Hare Stadium in which head coach Tommy Tuberville said his players appeared to be slogging through mud.
“We all looked slow, like we all had ankle weights on,” Tuberville said.
How did Auburn’s defense play?
“Like we’ve been in two-a-days for about two weeks,” linebacker Chris Evans said with a laugh.
“That’s not an excuse, but you could really see it.”
Relief is coming soon. The Tigers will practice only lightly this afternoon and then get a much-deserved day off on Monday, their first break since camp opened on Aug. 2.
Saturday’s scrimmage was Auburn’s second, and possibly last, of the preseason. Like the first scrimmage, the stadium was closed to media and most fans, no statistics were released and no assistant coaches were made available for comment.
But Tuberville, who spent about 15 minutes offering his appraisal of the day, said there was still plenty to be happy about. He even asked for a roster so he could make sure he wasn’t forgetting anybody. The first name out of Tuberville’s mouth was true freshman Philip Pierre-Louis, a 5-8 speedster who is quickly becoming a camp sensation.
