LSU redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee returned to practice Wednesday after missing a few days with an ankle injury.
Lee couldn’t have afforded to stay sidelined much longer and remain in the race for the starting job along with junior Andrew Hatch and true freshman Jordan Jefferson. Look for the Tigers to play multiple quarterbacks this season, but I still think Hatch might be the one to get the start in the opener against Appalachian State.
Regardless of how it shakes out, Hatch is a great story. He was recruited to BYU when current LSU offensive coordinator Gary Crowton was the head coach there. After Crowton resigned under pressure at BYU, Hatch opted for Harvard and played on the freshman team in the fall of 2005 at the Ivy League school.
Hatch went on his church mission that next year down in Chile and ended up hurting his knee while playing soccer. He was out for the next seven months while recovering.
“I hadn’t played soccer my whole life and was down there in South America, and that’s all they play,” Hatch said. “It was a freak thing. No more soccer for me.”
Hatch had surgery the first part of 2007, but wound up at LSU in the fall of 2007 as a walk-on. Crowton was looking for another quarterback behind Matt Flynn and reached out to Hatch.
Of his winding journey to LSU, Hatch jokes, “Yeah, LSU doesn’t tend to recruit quarterbacks from South America.”
