Grand jury may probe another Scruggs case

A federal grand jury that meets Aug. 19 in Oxford is expected to investigate whether imprisoned trial lawyer Dickie Scruggs committed another crime – this one in 2006 in Hinds County.

Grand jurors could hear from former State Auditor Steve Patterson, former Booneville lawyer Joey Langston and former New Albany lawyer Timothy Balducci, who met last week with officials from the Public Integrity Division of the Justice Department. All three have pleaded guilty to corruption charges.

“Our client continues to cooperate in any way he can,” said one of Patterson’s lawyers, Hiram Eastland Jr. of Greenwood. “It’s still an ongoing investigation.”
