Johnson High’s Savage comes to AU prepared
AUBURN – This time a year ago, almost to the day, Jomarcus Savage sat patiently in a sauna-like, one-room house in downtown Huntsville’s Constitution Village, waiting to have his picture taken for The Times’ preseason football section.
To make matters worse, at least for Savage, he had to be there in costume for the cover, playing the lead role of Dorothy in our “No Place Like Home Wizard of Oz” theme.
Reminded of that Friday – and perhaps recalling the accompanying wig at the shoot – Savage rolled his eyes as the memory registered and said, “I remember.”
The former Johnson High star defensive lineman has traded in the wig and polka-dots for an Auburn orange practice jersey. His performing arts career now consists of preparing for the upcoming season.
If the first week of practice is any indication, the 6-foot-2, 280-pounder is well on his way to one day starring as a strongside end for the Tigers.
“One thing he has shown in his brief time here is explosion,” said defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads.
