MSU’s Harbison anxious to start
STARKVILLE — The anticipation is building for Mississippi State defensive coordinator Charlie Harbison.
Harbison is anxious for Saturday to get here so he can reassemble his defense in preparation for Sunday’s first day of practice.
“There’s nothing like getting back out there on the grass, getting with the players and start back working,” Harbison said. “We’re anxious to get the continuity back and everyone working for a common cause.”
In January, Mississippi State head coach Sylvester Croom promoted Harbison to defensive coordinator after Ellis Johnson left the program.
Croom liked the way Harbison carried himself as safeties coach and decided to promote from within rather than bring someone in from outside the program.
“I watched Charlie,” Croom said. “I knew of his reputation before I hired him as our safety coach. (Harbison had) a strong reputation and (was) probably as strong as any assistant coach I was hearing about in this conference.
“I had no idea we were going to be losing Ellis, but about midseason I had decided that was the route I was going to go after seeing (Harbison) coach on the field and preparing in our coverages.”
