‘Perfect 10’ Collier gets Hall call
Reggie Collier didn’t come out of nowhere. It just seemed that way. He actually went to Southern Miss out of D’Iberville, where he was one of the best-kept secrets in the history of Mississippi high school football.
Collier, who will be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Friday night, cites two reasons for his lack of high school notoriety:
“I was raised by my granddaddy who was a Pentecostal preacher, and he didn’t believe in playing sports. I didn’t really play football until I moved back in with my daddy as a junior in high school. Then, I broke my collarbone after my third game my junior year. So my senior year of high school was my first full football season.”
“My senior year when I was the quarterback at D’Iberville, everybody in the country was recruiting Eddie Hornback who was the quarterback at Ocean Springs. Nearly all the colleges went right past D’Iberville to Ocean Springs. Nobody knew who I was.”
