Challenges: Poverty still haunts Mississippi

By: Magnolia Tribune - July 28, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 7/28/8

“It is a revolutionary world we live in. Governments repress their people; and millions are trapped in poverty while the nation grows rich; and wealth is lavished on armaments.”
– Robert F. Kennedy

Forty-one years ago, when Robert F. Kennedy visited the Mississippi Delta in what would become one of a series of “poverty tours” politicians would undertake, the nation was eerily like today.

The Measure of America study released earlier this month by Oxfam America and several private foundations found Mississippi last among states in most significant measures, from health care to education to the “opportunity to live a decent life.”

The study was based on information collected before Hurricane Katrina struck, so conditions could even be worse now.
