Scruggs will not serve time in Pensacola

By: Magnolia Tribune - July 23, 2008

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, 7/23/8

Richard “Dickie” Scruggs, sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a judicial bribery scheme, will not serve his time in a minimum security prison in Pensacola, Fla., the Daily Journal learned from court documents filed late Tuesday.

A motion filed on behalf of his attorney son Zach states that Dickie Scruggs was a Navy pilot, and now Zach understands his father has been precluded from being assigned to Pensacola because the Bureau of Prisons has a policy of not assigning anyone there if he’s held a pilot’s license.

The Pensacola prison is part of a large Naval base and air facility.

Zach, who was sentenced to serve 14 months for his role in the scandal, recently asked that he too be sent to Pensacola “to ease the travel burden on his family,” especially his “health-embattled mother,” Dianne.

Now, Zach is asking that he be sent to the Low Satellite Camp at Forrest City, Ark. That’s the same prison assigned to co-defendant, Sidney Backstrom, sentenced to 28 months in the bribery scheme.

It’s not clear if Zach wants to go to Forrest City because his father will be sentenced there.
