Jackson needs to spend nearly $70 million to bring city streets up to standards, but will be able to do only $1.5 million worth of paving in the program that kicked off this week.
This year’s project will involve the repaving of more than 8 1/2 miles, including parts of Fortification Street, Hanging Moss Road and Ridgewood Road, said Public Works Director Thelman Boyd, who noted the total amount of money currently needed to improve streets.
Thames said the city hopes to continue the resurfacing project every year as long as the funds are available. Hinds County provided $500,000 for this year’s resurfacing project.
In 2007, five of the city’s 1,100 miles of streets were resurfaced.
