Jackson Mayor Frank Melton said he plans to tap former state Rep. John Reeves as the replacement for Municipal Court Judge Melvin Priester.
Priester, who was appointed by Melton in 2005, was promoted by the Mississippi Supreme Court on Friday. Priester will be one of two new special judges to assist Hinds County Circuit Court with its backlog of criminal cases over the next two years.
On Sunday, Melton said he will seek approval later this week from the Jackson City Council on his selection.
“I was looking at Reeves for a couple of areas,” Melton said Sunday. “First, I was thinking about putting him on the redevelopment authority board. Then I thought about the Airport Commission. But when the judgeship came open on Friday, I thought that with his background as a lawyer, it was a perfect fit,” Melton said.
