Thursday night didn’t go as Jamont Gordon had planned or hoped.
Of the 60 players selected in the NBA draft, the Mississippi State guard wasn’t one of them.
So, what’s next for Gordon?
Good question, and one with a muddy picture, compounded by the fact he didn’t return numerous phone calls in an effort to clarify several issues.
And while there are indeed several, two stand out:
First, is he academically eligible?
Second, did he hire an agent?
Due to privacy issues, MSU compliance director Bracky Brett can’t say whether Gordon is academically eligible for the fall, should he decide to return for his senior season. However, Gordon did miss several weeks of class after the NCAA Tournament to decide on his future.
In May, though, he did go on the record to say he returned in time to finish the semester and take final exams.
If he didn’t pass the necessary workload, he wouldn’t be eligible to play the first semester. Brett did say NCAA rules state that if Gordon wants to return, he has 30 days following the draft to inform Greg Byrne of his intentions through a written letter.
