We’re rubbish – Boston v. New York in sports
ANAHEIM – Boston, that annoying gnat of a city, has won yet another championship with the Celtics. And it is now probably a healthy exercise for us to humble ourselves by comparing the relative successes of New York and Boston area pro teams.
I’m not just talking about the last few years, when the Patriots and Red Sox have dominated everybody but Eli Manning. I’m talking for all time. For decades, we have been deluding ourselves about New York’s superiority, based almost exclusively on Babe Ruth.
If you throw out defunct teams and leagues, plus those clubs that moved elsewhere, New York owns a 49-32 championship edge over Boston. That is, of course, in large part due to the Yankees’ 26 titles. But then you have to realize that New York has nine pro teams in the four major sports, while Boston only has four. That means that the average New York area team has won only about 5.5 titles, while the average Boston team has captured eight.
