The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 6/15/8
After last year’s statewide elections, Mississippi Democrats were down and out.
Not only did Gov. Haley Barbour take the Mansion back in a walk, Republicans captured all the statewide elective offices, save incumbent Attorney General Jim Hood’s.
There were slight gains in the Legislature, but the status quo of Republican veto power remained in the Senate. The Democrats’ only bright spot was beating back a GOP-backed effort to unseat House Speaker Billy McCoy – barely.
My how the winds of political fortune can change so quickly.
