Performa Entertainment Real Estate CEO John Elkington said he will send a letter to the city of Jackson this week outlining the company’s grievances over what he described as a lack of cooperation in the revitalization of Farish Street.
“We’ve just had it in Jackson,” Elkington said. “We get absolutely nothing from the city except criticism from the mayor.”
Elkington’s comments follow the news that Performa has had trouble getting a local bank to lend the company money for construction and that the development is too close to the Mississippi College School of Law to sell alcohol. State law forbids the sale of alcohol within 100 feet of a school.
Elkington said the city has not lived up to its obligations and Mayor Frank Melton’s constant threats to press for the firing of the Memphis-based firm have poisoned the financial climate around the $12 million development.
