Copper-theft bill awaits Barbour’s signature

House lawmakers voted today to require them to tag and hold metal for three days instead of five. A requirement to gather fingerprints from metal sellers was stripped from the bill.

House Judiciary B Committee Chairman Willie Bailey, D-Greenville, said the changes do not “water down” the bill.

“It’s going to be an inconvenience,” he said of the bill’s effect on business owners. “When we’re trying to solve this cancerous problem, everybody has to share some kind of inconvenience. So I’m not worried about that.”
