Whatever rationale Florida coach Urban Meyer, South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier and Arkansas’ Bobby Petrino used in voting against a Southeastern Conference proposal for an early signing period in football – likely not wanting to shrink their own recruiting pool – it’s still a much-needed change.

Recruiting is enough of a time-consuming activity for coaches, players and their families that any opportunity to reduce the madness should be embraced. If a kid knows for certain which school he wants to play for by late November, why make him wait until February to officially sign a letter of intent?
A dual purpose is served by making this SEC measure, which passed Thursday by a 9-3 vote, into NCAA law: One, it gives players freedom from all the nagging phone calls and text messages that would diminish once they’ve signed with a school; and two, coaches who rack up early verbal commitments can lock up players without worrying about rivals stealing them away before the February signing day.
The NCAA has an early signing period for basketball. Shouldn’t football receive the same consideration? …
Paul Spicer put the correct spin Thursday on his return to the Jaguars. The veteran defensive end publicly downplayed his contract differences with the club because he knows his leverage diminished with the drafting of Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves. Spicer, who turns 33 in August, is better off trying to get his last big payday from the Jaguars by acting like a happy camper than publicly griping about money. …
