Mississippians’ input on taxes sought

Mississippians will be able to sound off next month to a commission studying a tax system overhaul.

Residents and interest groups can give their opinions to commission members on May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mississippi Telcom Center.

A news release issued today instructed people to e-mail taxstudy@governor.state.ms.us or call (601) 359-3150 by May 16 to reserve speaking time. Those who do not reserve time before that date may attend the meeting but will be placed at the end of the speaking list.

Written statements will also be accepted.

The commission appointed by Republican Gov. Haley Barbour is studying how citizens are taxed. Barbour has said his goal is “a significant tax cut.” But he recently added that it may have to wait a year or two.
