At the close of Mississippi’s 2008 legislative session an Associated Press photographer snapped a shot of Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and Speaker of the House Billy McCoy sitting in their shirtsleeves, talking amicably in the Capitol.
It was a rare moment, more personal than political, and almost poignant because such civility has been seen less and less as partisanship has sharply increased.
McCoy is a Democrat; Bryant is Republican. They are both fierce warriors for their causes and favored issues, and yes, for their parties.
However, the two men were key in at least lowering the decibels and, some say, tempering the harshness of partisan debate that has characterized recent legislative sessions.
