More than two years after Hurricane Katrina, Gov. Haley Barbour said Thursday, “the most pressing issue still facing Mississippians is finding affordable, permanent housing.”
His comments followed an awards ceremony at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum, where he recognized 40 employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
The Republican governor was quick to remind the audience of more than 600 that the same people receiving awards — from internal affairs personnel to operations managers — were also victims of “the nation’s worst natural disaster.”
Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August 2005, destroying the homes of more than 47,000 Mississippi families, Barbour said.
