North Mississippians will go back to the polls one more time to elect a U.S. representative to hold the seat until a full-term congressman is elected in November.
Travis Childers of Booneville came within 410 votes Tuesday of avoiding the May 13 runoff with Southaven’s Greg Davis.
They were on a six-man, non-party ballot in a special election to choose an interim replacement for Roger Wicker, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate in December 2007.
With all 462 precincts reporting across 24 counties, Childers had 33,138 votes, or 49.4 percent, while Davis had 31,066, or 46.3 percent. Four other candidates -including two who didn’t want to be on the ballot – took the remaining 4.3 percent of the vote to force the runoff.
