Madison supervisors reject call to aid Hinds

Madison County supervisors have opted not to offer debris removal assistance to Jackson and other areas of Hinds County that were damaged in severe storms April 4.

District 3 Supervisor D.I. Smith this morning asked the board to consider offering manpower or equipment to areas piled with debris in the neighboring county. Smith’s motion died without a second.

“I just think it would be a great gesture of good will,” Smith said.

Hinds County and Jackson officials have not asked Madison County for assistance.

“We empathize with Hinds County and Jackson, but we have our own issues in Madison County and we should focus on those issues,” District 2 Supervisor and Board President Tim Johnson said.

Madison County Road Manager Lawrence Morris did not support Smith’s measure, saying his department’s work is backed up with its own debris removal and pick-up of large items.
