Proposed Jackson hotel tax hike: Legislators exempt themselves
House Bill 1710 would give Jackson residents the chance to vote on whether to increase taxes on hotel rooms in the city. Revenue generated would be used to increase the salaries of Jackson police officers.
House members today narrowly approved the legislation after it was changed to exempt patrons who stay in hotels for an extended period of time — in other words, to exempt legislators from any take hike. How very courageous!
If the tax is appropriate for the traveling business community, it’s appropriate for state legislators, too. After all, the taxpayers are picking up the tab for travel and per diem for legislators
