Names will stay on ballot, Hood decides

Steve Holland’s and Glenn McCullough Jr.’s names will stay on the 1st District Congress ballot for the April 22 non-party special election, a state Attorney General’s opinion stated Friday.

Democrat Holland of Plantersville and Republican McCullough of Tupelo lost their bids April 1 to become their respective party nominees in the Nov. 4 general election to replace Roger Wicker of Tupelo, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate in late 2007.

Last week, they asked Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann to remove their names from the ballot because they are not active candidates for the post.

The April 22 non-party special election will yield a U.S. House member to hold the seat until the two-year replacement takes office in January 2009.
