Judge orders beef plant trial delayed until August
Aug. 25 is the new trial date for defendants accused in the Mississippi Beef Plant scandal that cost the state millions in loan guarantees.
Tuesday, Chief Judge Michael P. Mills agreed with defense and government requests to delay the trial from its original May 19 date.
“The court finds that the ends of justice will be served by granting subject continuance,” Mills wrote in his two-page order.
He also said it was unreasonable to expect adequate preparation time for the May date, with multiple defendants and the complicated nature of the prosecution.
