Madison gets OK for land annexation

Madison has the go-ahead to annex most of the land it requested along with several subdivisions, but city officials say they will ask for a special hearing to request another 2.5 square miles.

The Mississippi Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a special chancery judge’s 2006 ruling granting about 80 percent of the 15.7 square miles Madison sought to annex.

The city and residents who opposed annexation had both appealed the chancery ruling – the residents saying Madison should not be granted any land and the city arguing it should get the three excluded parcels.

“Right now, I don’t know exactly when it will go into effect, because we hope to have another hearing,” Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler said.
