Dickie Scruggs and Sid Backstrom Enter Guilty Plea – UPDATE

By: Magnolia Tribune - March 14, 2008

First of all, I want to thank the YallPolitics Nation for all of the emails and visits this morning. We have had press inquiries out the wazoo. It’s a bit overwhelming. We have had some serious site overloads, so site availability will be up and down today for sure.

According to news reports and our friend NMC at FOLO, whose site also hit the skids within minutes of the plea, Dickie has entered a plea of guilty to conspiracy. Whether or not Dickie will cooperate with the government is still an open item. It is unlikely to think that Dickie would testify against his son. Sid Backstrom also entered a plea of guilty to Count 1 of the indictment and will cooperate with the government.

The fate of Zach Scruggs was not decided in this morning’s events. Judge Biggers is still apparently standing firm to a March 31 trial date, which Zach would face if a plea is not entered before then.

UPDATE

The Clarion Ledger is reporting that Zach Scruggs has offered up his law license and that prosecution on him will be deferred. We have not been able to find any information that would support that in the court documents.

Here are the documents that are up on PACER today.
