Rhetoric ignores Miss.

Rhetoric ignores Miss.

By: Magnolia Tribune - March 10, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 3/9/8

Virtually every Republican candidate for the vacant 3rd Congressional seat sounds like he was running to represent the needs of some state other than Mississippi, the nation’s poorest state, whose coastal area still lies prostrate from history’s worst natural disaster in 2005.

Most irksome is the rhetoric of the leading GOP candidates that makes Mississippi seem to be a mere fiefdom of corporate interests, a sort of road kill whose carcass is meant to be picked over by the vultures of powerful businesses.

After the state lost a House seat in the 2000 census, the Mississippi 3rd became virtually a safe House district for the GOP when a Republican-leaning federal court panel in 2002 designed the district to keep GOPer Chip Pickering in office.
