Immigration: Gov. Barbour should veto bill

By: Magnolia Tribune - March 7, 2008

The Mississippi Legislature has waded off into the complicated immigration issue with a politically pandering bill that does more harm than good.

The House and Senate now have passed a bill that would use Homeland Security registration for employers to check employees’ immigrant status.

It’s a bad bill and Gov. Haley Barbour should veto it.

Senate Bill 2988, approved overwhelmingly by House members Wednesday, would have companies use eVerify, a federal pilot program that is voluntary, to access Social Security and federal immigration records to prove employees are in the country legally.
