Municipalities would be prevented from placing cameras on state highways’ traffic lights within their jurisdiction if legislation approved Tuesday by the state House becomes law.
Rep. Steve Holland, D-Plantersville, offered an amendment to the Department of Transportation appropriations bill that would prevent any governing authority from placing cameras on state highways, something that has been considered in Tupelo and other cities in the state.
“This is absolutely the great scourge on motor vehicle operators that some blood-sucking entrepreneur could come to town and sell a city council on something like this,” said Holland.
Holland’s amendment would cramp the plans of Tupelo and other municipalities that are looking to enter into contracts with private businesses to place cameras at traffic lights. The camera would be used to catch people running red lights.
