Booze after hours on radar

Bargoers and police officers working the late shift stream into her down-home place – Sylvia’s – off of Medgar Evers Boulevard for catfish, pork chops, shrimp, burgers and wings. She offers beer, but some either pass or bring a bagged drink.

The atmosphere of her after-hours restaurant will change if Jackson Police Chief Malcolm McMillin has his way.

McMillin is not only pushing for a citywide closing time of 2 a.m. for any business that sells or allows the consumption of alcohol, but a task force also has been launched to make sure the businesses follow current laws and to find places that are allowing alcohol consumption past his proposed curfew.

Police have identified 56 night spots that are allowing consumption after 2 a.m.
