Dowdy statement on Mettetal’s party switch
JACKSON (Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008) – Wayne Dowdy, chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party, issued this statement today following news that Sen. Nolan Mettetal of Sardis has decided to switch to the Republican Party.
“It’s unfortunate that Democrats in Panola and Tate counties who thought they were voting for a Democrat in last year’s state Senate elections now suddenly find themselves without representation for the next four years,” Dowdy said.
“The Mississippi Democratic Party has always welcomed everyone in our organization. To say that conservatives are not welcome is completely untrue.
“All you have to do is look at Democrats who serve in the state House and state Senate and you’ll find a vast array of political beliefs. Or look at our state’s congressional delegation, where you’ll find Congressman Gene Taylor representing the 4th Congressional District and Congressman Bennie Thompson representing the 2nd Congressional District.”
