Let the facts speak in the lawyer issue

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 29, 2008

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal Editorial, 1/29/8

Former House Appropriations Committee Chairman Charlie Capps, D-Cleveland, was in many ways a stereotype and in other ways an anachronism.

Silver-haired and cigar chomping, Capps, who stepped down earlier this decade, was the epitome of the one-time Delta legislative power broker.

Capps had his customary cigar at a meeting in the 1990s when he warned then-Attorney General Mike Moore not to waste any state money pursuing what almost everyone at the time believed was a foolish lawsuit against the tobacco companies to recoup government money spent treating smoking-related illnesses.

Moore assured Capps he would not. Instead Moore relied on an army of private attorneys who put up their time and resources to win literally billions of dollars for Mississippi.
