Barbour set to announce rental housing initiatives

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 24, 2008

The Sun Herald, 1/23/8

It appears there’s a rental housing blitz on the horizon.

Staffers in Gov. Haley Barbour’s office told the Sun Herald on Wednesday that about $732 million in federal money is dedicated to affordable housing initiatives, and construction could begin soon on a massive campaign to build some 7,500 small rental units in South Mississippi. Through incentives offered to the property owners, the thousands of small rental units could be built within six months from the date builders receive construction permits.

Barbour is expected to announce Thursday that some $112 million in additional monies has been allocated to the small rental assistance program, bringing the total up to $262 million for small rental homes. The public comment period on the small rental program will wrap up early next month, and from there construction will start soon after, staffers said.
