Miss. may play bigger role in president race

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 10, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 1/10/8

It’s possible Mississippians could choose other candidates. Democrats and Republicans are divided over who to support.

On the GOP side, the state’s congressional delegation is also split. Former Sen. Trent Lott and 3rd District Rep. Chip Pickering support McCain. Sen. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, appointed to replace Lott until a special election is held, like Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee.

Some evangelicals and social conservatives are supporting Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister. Others are considering former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

McCain, Romney, Giuliani and Thompson visited Mississippi last year.

“Most Mississippi Republicans I talk to have not decided who they’re going to vote for,” said Jim Herring, chairman of the state’s Republican Party. “We emphasize who is good and who can beat the Democrats.”

Democrats are mulling whether to support John Edwards, Clinton or Obama. Edwards and Obama visited Mississippi last year.

But some African Americans who voted for President Bill Clinton have said they’re not sure if they’ll choose Obama, an African American, over Clinton’s wife, Hillary.
