Madison County supervisors have adopted a resolution opposing recent plans for an alternate Canton-to-Edwards corridor.
But officials plan to ask Congress for permission to use the rest of the $3.2 million in federal funding, which was intended for an environmental impact study of an alternate to Mississippi 22, for other highway improvements in the county.
“We definitely don’t want to lose this money,” District 5 Supervisor Paul Griffin said.
Plans for a new Canton-to-Edwards route drew strong opposition from residents during public hearings in November sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Transportation. In sessions at Canton, Edwards and Flora, residents reviewed maps of three proposed routes running from I-55 in Madison County to I-20 in Hinds County.
