Travis Childers (D) Announces for MS-1st

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 3, 2008

Travis Childers of Booneville announced today that he is
running for the Congressional seat that is being vacated by First District
Congressman Roger Wicker. Childers’ announcement comes shortly after Gov.
Haley Barbour appointed Wicker to the U.S. Senate seat that was recently
vacated by Trent Lott.

Travis Childers, a Democrat, has served as Chancery Clerk of Prentiss County
for the past sixteen years, and was recently elected to his fifth term with
75 percent of the vote. Childers has worked as a Realtor and appraiser in
Booneville since 1978. In addition to his real estate business, Childers and
his family owns and operates a nursing home and personal care facility in
Booneville that provides care to more than 120 residents.

“After prayerful consideration with my family, I have decided to run for
Congress in 2008,” Childers said. “We have a great history in North
Mississippi of getting things done by working together across regional,
governmental and party lines. I want to take that same spirit of
bipartisanship and can-do attitude to Washington.”

Childers also expressed confidence that he could put together the money,
support and organization needed to win the campaign. “From my experience and
contacts in public service and in business to the planning we have done the
last four weeks, we feel like we are prepared to win and prepared to lead,”
Childers said.

Travis Childers is forty-nine years old. He and his wife of 27 years, Tami,
have two children – Dustin, a first year law student at Mississippi College,
and Lauren, a freshman at Ole Miss. They are Members of East Booneville
Baptist Church.
