Gov. Haley Barbour’s selection of Mr. Wicker, a protégé of Mr. Lott, was announced in Jackson, Miss. Mr. Barbour said it was important that a new senator have Mr. Lott’s “conservative values” and be able to work with the Magnolia State’s other senator, Thad Cochran, also a Republican, The Associated Press reported.
“I am honored that Governor Barbour felt I had the experience and qualifications to be Mississippi’s next senator,” Mr. Wicker said in a written statement in which he described himself as “a mainstream conservative.”
