Coast lawmakers keep rebuilding alive in Capitol

Predictably, South Mississippi lawmakers said affordable housing, insurance and other Katrina-recovery issues would be their top priorities when the Legislature convenes Jan. 8.

But a budget crunch might hamper their plans.

Gov. Haley Barbour has asked the heads of state agencies to trim their budgets to prepare for an expected slump in revenue. Legislators also are expected to pass the Mississippi Adequate Education Program early this session, which would appropriate millions more for K-12 schools next fiscal year.
