Wooten 18 votes ahead of Reeves

By: Magnolia Tribune - December 19, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger, 12/19/7

Longtime Jackson lawmaker John Reeves lost by a scant 18 votes to political newcomer Adrienne Wooten in a special election Tuesday that created confusion among many voters and generated more charges of voter intimidation and illegal campaigning.

But with so few votes separating them, Reeves, a Republican who has served in House District 71 for 24 years, said the battle isn’t over. He and Wooten, a Democrat, have filed petitions with the state House of Representatives, and the majority-Democrat chamber will determine next month which candidate will fill the seat.

Reeves said he wasn’t surprised by Tuesday’s results but contended that Wooten and her campaign workers intimidated voters and participated in illegal campaigning outside polls.
