‘High stakes chess game’ opening over Senate appointments

By: Magnolia Tribune - December 14, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 12/14/7

With Democrats outnumbering Republicans in the Mississippi Senate, they will take away Gov. Haley Barbour’s Senate candy store, right? Don’t count on it.

Two weeks ago, newly elected Senate Democrats sat down with incoming GOP Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant, mostly to get a reading on his pre-election crack implying that only Republicans would get the better committee chairmanships.

Some who were there say they were satisfied Bryant has pulled back from that statement – at least for now – and says he will treat Democrats fairly.
