Bryant faces little depth of experience among Senate GOP

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 20, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 11/20/7

Mississippi’s new lieutenant governor, Republican Phil Bryant, takes office in January and will spend the next several weeks assembling his “go team.”

As Bryant chooses Senate leaders, he’ll work with a slightly smaller number of the GOP faithful, whose average experience is less than half that of Sen. Tommy Gollott alone.

Democrats will hold 28 of 52 seats in the Senate, up three. The Republicans are down three seats, to 24. But they still have enough strength to ensure that vetoes by Republican Gov. Haley Barbour will stand. If all 52 senators are present, it takes 34 votes to override.
