Big money has created lazy state politics

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 19, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 11/18/7

The big money involved in modern politics is universally condemned – by good government groups, the media and even candidates themselves.

The good government groups point out all of the conflicts and power of special interests based on the money. The media report on campaigns, giving credibility to the haves and dismissing the have-nots based on the money. And the candidates just have to base everything on the money – how to get it, how to spend it and how to get more of it.

Candidates now spend most of their time on the telephone raising money. All will tell you they hate it, that they don’t like asking for money, but they think they must to be competitive. They must “buy” name ID with voters.

But is it how it should be?
