Council: A CPA for Melton’s mystery budget?

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 30, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 10/30/7

Mayor Frank Melton’s hocus-pocus with the budget – that is, his now you seem ’em, now you don’t deficits – has the City Council wanting to hire a certified public account to decook the books.

“We have realized for a number of years that we have needed some support when it comes to examining the budget with a fine-toothed comb,” Council President Leslie Burl McLemore said. “We are not CPAs. We have felt for quite some time that we have needed help with the gaps we wanted to fill. And it was brought clear during the budget process.”

During budget hearings, after the state auditor’s office said Melton’s plan to use $400,000 confiscated in drug busts to fund pay raises for his former and current bodyguards he promoted was illegal, Ward 7 Councilwoman Margaret Barrett-Simon said Melton “is completely out of control.”
