Mayor Frank Melton said he would not introduce an ordinance to raise water and sewer rates for the city.
He originally said he would to help balance the budget. The rate increase would have generated an estimated $2.9 million for the city.
“My theory is, let’s look at the two largest budgets. The two largest budgets are the police department and the fire department. And we can start looking for cuts there,” Jackson City Council President Leslie Mclemore.
City officials said if the mayor does not introduce the increase, the public works department will have to cut expenditures to make up the difference.
