Campaign donations reflect fight over lawsuits restrictions
On the campaign trail, limiting lawsuits continues to be a hot topic. Republicans aired a television ad saying Franks, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, a “is a personal injury trial lawyer who tried to stop tort reform.” Franks responded he was a co-author of a 2004 law that capped damage awards and protected innocent sellers of defective products.
Republican Gov. Haley Barbour says his Democratic challenger, John Arthur Eaves Jr. is “a trial lawyer who spends his career practicing law, attacking people so he can make more money.”
Eaves says he would not try to repeal the lawsuit restrictions.
Eaves points out he and Barbour are both lawyers. There the similarity ends, as Eaves says: “He represents the powerful. And I represent the powerless. And that’s the difference.”
