Jackson Mayor Frank Melton wants to eliminate $2.6 million in increases in his proposed fiscal 2008 budget by having police collect past-due court fines and by repealing a waiver on construction permit fees for downtown development.
Melton said city employees owe $2 million of an estimated $10 million in outstanding municipal fines. The employees will have until Oct. 1 to pay those fines or either have their wages garnisheed or be arrested and forced to pay before being released, he said.
