Will Barbour’s GOP ticket strategy unify Mississippi for the party?

By: Magnolia Tribune - August 17, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 8/17/7

Running candidates for statewide office from the same political party as a ticket, historically taboo in Mississippi politics, evidently is the 2007 campaign strategy of the state Republican Party.

The tip-off came when state Sen. Charlie Ross conceded on TV to State Auditor Phil Bryant in the hotly contested Republican lieutenant governor’s race.

Ross coupled Bryant as the party’s consummate conservative running-mate of Gov. Haley Barbour (standing close by), sharply reversing his campaign stance that he was closer to Barbour than Bryant.
