Federal judge won’t delay primary vote in Noxubee County

By: Magnolia Tribune - July 31, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger, 7/31/7

Noxubee County’s Democratic Party primary will go off on schedule next week.

U.S. District Judge Tom Lee ruled Monday he would not delay the elections. His decision came following a hearing Monday on proposed remedies to satisfy his June 29 opinion that black political leaders in Noxubee County had violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The case is the first of its kind to come to trial in the United States in which African Americans were accused of discriminating against white voters.
